ichael R. Merris

M.R. Merris, born February 12, 1953, in Jacksonville, Illinois, began his poetic journey in 8th grade, where his first attempt earned him an F. Despite early struggles, he found solace in writing. His life took a tumultuous turn, starting with drinking at 13, leading to blackouts by 15. After two years as a merchant seaman and service in the US Navy, he returned to civilian life in the 80s, sober and determined. Despite facing challenges including divorce, job loss, a heart attack at 56, and periods of homelessness, Merris persevered. Now, with a BA from SSU and on the path to becoming an alcohol and drug counselor, he uses his past to guide and support others facing similar struggles.
